Hawaii – Day 3

It's already become apparent that the struggling U.S. economy is affecting the Hawaiian islands.  I've never seen Maui so empty.  The condo complex where we're staying only has a 50% occupancy rate.

On Day #3 of our trip we visited Kaanapali beach which is normally packed towel-to-towel with sunbathers.  It was nearly empty.  Although this is a negative for Hawaii, it's a positive for us.  I've never enjoyed Kaanapali beach as much as I did today without the crowds.  The day was beautiful, and the water was the most spectactular color of turquoise.

It was a hot day – about 88F/31C.

The trade winds provided welcome relief in the heat.  The ocean current was strong and warranted a little extra caution when we swam.  The conditions were ideal for those who were sailing.

We had lunch at one of our favorite haunts.

The Hula Grill specializes in drinks with little umbrellas in them.  I had a Lava Flow with my lunch which is a combination of a Strawberry Daiquiri and a Pina Colada.  It has absolutely zero calories in it if you drink it while on vacation.  There's some special rule about calories and vacations and it especially applies to fruity drinks with umbrellas in them.

After lunch I walked through the shops in Whaler's Village which is adjacent to Kaanapali Beach.

I didn't buy anything because I don't need anything and the stores are pricey.  I did see a very pretty bracelet for only $5,000 but I managed to resist.

I returned to the beach for a few hours where I did quite a bit of swimming.  The water was perfect and amazingly clear.  I haven't been allowed to swim all summer because of my last surgery.  I got the ok from my doctor just prior to departing for Hawaii.  It feels great.  My arm has been pretty sore as a result, but it's nothing a few cocktails can't cure at the end of the day.

After a few hours more on Kaanapali Beach we ran out of sunscreen.  We decided to return "home" where we had more sunscreen waiting for us.  Our little cove was waiting for us too.

It was a beautiful day.  I feel so relaxed at this point I could almost melt into the sand.  The highlight of each day is taking a shower in the evening and washing off the beach grime.  I feel like a brand new person afterwards.

Oh, and the cocktail following the shower?  That helps too!

Tomorrow I'll share with you a little about some of the foods we eat here.  Some of them are available at home too, but they taste a lot better when you're consuming them on a patio overlooking the ocean.  We also just purchased a food item today I've never encountered before.  I'll tell you more about it tomorrow.  Actually, maybe some of you will be able to tell ME about it because I'm clueless.

Did I mention the sea turtles feed every evening right outside our condo?  We love watching them.  I'll try to get a photo but I don't have a telephoto with me so I don't know if I'll be able to capture them.  One swam right in front of my son today.  I think that moment alone made his entire vacation.

More tomorrow!

I know you’ve been there a few times, but if you haven’t done Cheeseburger in Paradise in Lahaina for breakfast, try it out. You sit over the ocean and have hawaiian sweetbread french toasted!

That cove of yours is heavenly. I’m trying to imagine the turtles; how cool is that?
And that drink photo made me want one now, and it’s not even 9am yet.Enjoy! Careful with your arm.

Maybe we should head back to Maui now! It was crowded, crowded, crowded when we were there for our honeymoon.
Props to you, girl, for managing to resist the $5,000 bracelet.
    Yea gods.

I recognized those places from your photos. My husband and I spent a week at the Whaler a few years ago. One day while we were there a mini tornado came across the sand and it picked up some towels, mats and other items. They flew in the air for the longest time out over the ocean to be gone forever. We also had spinner dolphins come up near the shore. That was really exciting.
    enjoy!

This sounds like just what you needed after the past couple months. I’m glad you can melt into the sand and relax!

When we went to Hawaii earlier this year, it was so nice for it not to be as crowded. I realize Hawaii is “hurting”, but I loved it! And the Hula Grill? Yum! Are you going t oiht Roy’s while you’re there? And we discovered the Honolua Store (or something like that) in the Kapalua resort area that has this cafeteria-like big plate local lunch specials that we both loved (they even had brown rice – if that’s your thing, which for me, it is) and cheap! Well, cheap for Hawaii. And The Gazebo for breakfast pancakes (which while the line can be long to get in, take advantage now with fewer tourists). OK, I’ll stop.

Ah, love Roys. We were really happy when he opened up shop nearby.
Kaanapali is a lot of fun. I have friends who like Wailea better, but not me.
