The iPhone 5 begins shipping today.
People are waiting in line, overnight, to be the first to get it.
I like gadgets; I like technology.
My smart-phone has made my life easier and so much more convenient.
(It has also made it much harder to turn “off” work.)
Obviously, I love cameras and lenses too.

And my laptop.
And my Kindle.
And my husband’s iPad when I occasionally borrow it.
And yet?
I have never understood why people spend the night camping out for a new phone.
(Conversely, I realize many of you probably don’t understand why I take photos with an expensive professional camera instead of a a camera phone.)
I was chomping at the bit to get the Canon 5D Mark III camera when it came out.
I put off getting a full frame camera for over a year, just waiting for the Mark III to be available.
I guess we all have different gadgets and/or technology we “love.”
My current phone happens to be an iPhone.
It’s two years old, and I’m “eligible” for a new one.
And, don’t get me wrong, I’m sure I will get a new iPhone in time.
And I’m sure I’ll like it.
(I’ll especially like the improvements to the camera, of course.)
But, I see no reason to camp out, stand in long lines, or make an event out of getting a new phone.
Almost every new piece of technology has a few bugs when it first hits the market.
I’m perfectly happy waiting awhile for those bugs to be resolved.
Are you a phone fanatic?
What’s your favorite gadget and/or type of technology?
And would you stand in a line for hours/days so you could be the first to have it?

No way I’d stand in line for a phone.
Still learning how to use my favorite piece of technology. And thus why I read your photo page. Thanks for the tips.
Your welcome.
Hopefully, I’ll be posting more regularly.
If my appendix doesn’t burst ….
I would never stand in a long line for a gadget purchase…. probably not even if they were giving the item away. Why? Because I’m old and my feet and back hurt so lines and I don’t see eye to eye. My favorite technology item, which I guess is not a gadget is my iMac.
I barely have a dumb phone, let alone a smart phone and probably the only reason I would have for purchasing an iPhone would be for the camera technology it has.
I do like my phone, although it stresses me out sometimes.
(And I rarely use it as a phone, come to think of it.)
I will enjoy a better camera-phone whenever I update though …
As much as I love technology and my gadgets – particularly my Nikon D90, my laptop, my Kindle Fire – I am not particularly attached to my phone. I recently upgraded to the Droid Razr, and the only thing I’ve used it for is a flashlight, a GPS (it’s biggest value, as far as I’m concerned) and to play Angry Birds while I ignore The Young One as he drives (it’s either Angry Birds or a fear-induced heart attack). Phones just don’t make my heart go pitty pat.
Beloved keeps asking me why I have such an expensive phone. I keep telling him I need a flashlight, a GPS and want to play Angry Birds while I ignore The Young One as he drives. You really can’t argue with that kind of logic…
No, and I wouldn’t even try to.
It makes perfect sense to me.
: )
Someone posted elsewhere…..I’d stand in line for a hot Krispy Kreme doughnut but not a gadget. I thought that was pretty funny. Personally though, there’s not a lot of things I’d stand in line for. I don’t even like to stand in line at the airport or grocery store so….I wait until lines die down. My time is more important to me than that and I prefer to choose how I waste it rather than have some marketing campaign or social pressure choose for me.
I suppose for some people it’s a fun adventure?
It just seems so much easier to order everything online these days.
: )
Yeah, no. I’m getting one. I ordered it last Friday. But mine won’t be here for a few more weeks and really it’s okay. I want it badly, but I don’t need to be first to have it.
Let me know how you like it! : )
I do look forward to having a better camera phone!
I have a Samsung Galaxy phone and it’s time for an upgrade. I cannot decide whether to get the new Galaxy or the iPhone. Pros and cons to both, so I have done nothing. Soon, very very soon. Standing in line for a gadget? No, not on my list of things to do.
