I was contacted a few months ago and offered a press pass to cover Photo Video West in San Diego County.
I requested a second press pass for Miss Kay.
The two of us attended the event at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Saturday.
Photo Video West consisted of an exhibition hall of photography related vendors showing off their wares.
There were also seminars regarding photography and video taking place throughout the weekend.
Most of the information at Photo Video West was aimed at the hobbyist/photography enthusiast crowd vs. the professional photographer.
There are millions of amateur/hobby photographers buying photography gear/products these days. It’s a booming business.
(I do wish people would learn to USE what they have the money to buy, but that’s an entirely different post. Especially in affluent Southern California where the vast majority of DSLR owners only know how to use a small fraction of their camera’s capabilities.)
In any case, Miss Kay and I had a good time.
I think it was eye-opening for her to get a peak into another aspect of my world.
On a positive note, I’m sure hobbyist photographers really enjoyed the conference.
There were a few negatives too, however.
The acoustics for the seminars were terrible – making them almost painful to attend.
Hopefully, the set-up for seminars will be improved for next year.
In addition, I personally would have liked to have seen a few bigger named vendors attending – Canon, Nikon, ThinkTank, B&H Photo, etc.
Maybe that’s because I exist in the professional photography world and I’m more accustom to conferences and conventions geared towards the professional?
All in all, I think it was a good event for photography enthusiasts.
There were raffles, and giveaways, and opportunities to learn new things.
Everyone seemed to be having a good time.
What could be better than a weekend event centered around a hobby you enjoy?
