Crystal Cove, Blue Whales And Sunset

I was at Crystal Cove State Park over the weekend.

It’s one of my frequent haunts.

The park is so beautiful – particularly the more isolated areas.

It costs fifteen bucks to park so (other than high tourist season) it isn’t usually overcrowded.

I have a California State Park Pass so I don’t have to pay the parking fee.

For someone like me, who is in and out of California State Parks on a weekly (and frequently more often) basis, the annual pass is the best deal imaginable.

I was kicking myself for not taking a longer lens with me on this particular visit.

I had barely stepped out of my car when a man approached me to talk about the blue whales spouting right that very minute.

He figured I’d be interested because I had a camera, after all.

I do love whales.

Seeing whales never gets old.

I don’t, however, go on whale watching boat tour trips.

(I call them barf specials.  If they don’t make YOU barf, you can bet someone standing next to you will be.)

Oops — I apologize for my editorial comments.

Anyway, without a long lens, I hiked out to one of my favorite viewpoints at the park.

Look closely ….

TWO, endangered, blue whales spouting at the same time!

I darkened the blue tones in the above photo so you can see the water spray more clearly, but I didn’t do anything else to the photo.

Do you know about blue whales?

They look small in the above photo but they’re HUGE.

They’re about 100 feet long and weigh 190 TONS …!

That makes them the biggest animal to have ever existed … that we know of, anyway.

The spray (spouting) you see in the above photo actually reaches about THIRTY FEET up into the air.

They’re truly amazing animals.

I was also treated to a beautiful sunset.

When the sun finally dipped below the horizon, I found I had wandered a long way from where my car was parked.

I stayed still for awhile –

Taking in the beauty of the sky, the quiet, the peacefulness.

As I gradually made my way back to my car,

I couldn’t resist taking a few more shots of the night’s final glow.

You can see Catalina Island out on the horizon if you look closely.

I love this time of year.

Well, except for the 90+ temps in the afternoons ….
